Does on the job training help?

It's funny how other schools like to talk about "wasting your time with senseless activities such as our Exclusive Bartending Externship Program. When The Premium Institute of Bartending Schools opened over 5 years ago, every employer we spoke to felt that the Externship Program was a great idea, and today, we have created 100's of new Job Placement relationships due to this program. You get real on-the-job-training BEFORE YOU GRADUATE, and the employer can get a look at you and see if you are a good fit for their establishment.

For me, I am more comfortable knowing that most professions, like Doctors, Nurses, Pilots, etc complete many hours of this type of training before they are on their own. Why should Bartending be any different?

So, do your homework, read between the lines, and make a decision on attending Bartending School based upon the facts. There are only a hand full of Bartending Schools across the country that do an Externship as part of the Bartending Program (we are the only one in DFW). Why don't others do it? I can't answer that. Maybe they don't have enough relationships with Bars and Restaurants or don't have the staff to manage the program. Either way, it is a HUGE advantage for our Graduates to have some job experience before they graduate.

Additionally, our Staffing Company, Premium Event Staffing allows all of our Graduates to be put of staff with us upon Graduation to assist in working the 100's of events we book each year. And remember, Premium Event Staffing NEVER charges a fee to the graduate. That means you keep the entire proceeds from the Event.

Getting a Bartending Job after you finish Bartending School

The Premium Institute of Bartending is approaching its 6th year in DFW. We are also approaching our 5,000th graduate. We have locations in Lewisville and Fort Worth. However; students from Plano, Frisco, Allen, McKinney, Dallas, Richardson, Garland, Rockwall, and more, attend our Bartending Classes because they want to earn great money, have fun, and work in a field that provides the flexibility that Bartending avails.

With this in mind, the big question is, will I get a job after I finish the Bartending Training? Well, over 80% of our graduates have done so. No, it's not 100%. Let me talk about the 20% who do not.

1. There are people that attend the class because someone else (maybe a parent or friend) says they should bartend, when actually; they have no interest in doing so.

2. I want a job but am not willing to do anything for myself to get it. For example, we had a job order last week for a Club in Dallas. They were looking for 2 Bartenders to work Friday and Saturday night shifts. Based upon the information we received from the owner, the Bartenders that are there currently make between $500 and $1000 a night in tips. We scheduled interviews for 4 people. Two of the four people never showed up for the interview. I’m sorry, but we can't help these people. No showing an interview is a reflection of the school, so these people we just can't help.

3. Finally, some people say they want to work but deep inside they don't. I received an email the other day from a graduate who was upset that he we didn't give him a job when he graduated. Of course, I looked to see when he graduated, and I noticed it was over three months ago. So, I looked for all correspondence from this person to see if he had requested any additional help in seeking employment. There wasn't anything from him. I did notice that we emailed him over 20 jobs in the same time period.

So, the bottom line is, we can only help those people that want to help themselves. We pride ourselves on our job placement program and our years of success say, we are definitely doing something right.

So, as long as you are motivated, have the personality to Bar Tend, we will make you part of the 80+%.

How to choose the right Bartending School

Lately, Bartending Schools are popping up and it is important to know that it takes a lot more than a four walls and a fancy website to properly prepare you to become a Professional Bartender.

Hopefully, some of the information in this article will not only help you in selecting the right school, but also help you in determining in Bartending is a good field for you.

First, Bartending is good for so many reasons. Since the money is so good and the hours are flexible, Bartending is great for College students looking to earn some money over the summers or during the school year. It is also good for someone who has a full time job but wants to earn extra money at night or on the weekends. It is also a great job for someone to do as their primary income. Most Bartenders will work a max of 24 hours a week. This avails you time for other interests. Most Bartenders make between $25 and $50 an hour (including tips), so 24 hours a week is typically enough.

To determine if Bartending school is a good fit for you, ask yourself the following questions.

1. Do I enjoy talking to people?

2. Do you like to work in a fun setting?

3. Are you open to working weekends?

The beauty of Bartending is that you can choose from so many different environments to work. some people like to just work Events, like Weddings, Concerts, Sporting Events, etc. Others like Country Clubs, Hotels, and Fine dining. Other, still prefer the night club scene. You can see by these areas, Bartending is for many different types of people.

So, now one to choosing the right school. As I mentioned earlier, it takes more than a fancy website to prepare you properly and provide you with graduate services when you are done. At The Premium Institute of Bartending, we ensure your whole experience is a positive one.

Event Bartending

When most people think of becoming a Bartender or even what their interpretation of the job may be, what most leave out is Event Bartending. When you go to concerts, sporting events, festivals, weddings, and other special events, there are always Bartenders there to serve up the drinks.

Let's say you have a full time job and just want to earn some extra money on weekends, but you may not want to commit to every weekend. Doing events allow you to book out your schedule for a couple of months at a time. This way, you choose how much you want to work and make.

Did you know that each Cowboy game has over 100 people serving drinks. Between, the concessions, booths, bars, restaurants, and private suites, the demand for TABC certified Bartenders is quite high.

Now, think about Holiday Partes. Last year, we had Bartenders make over $500 working on New Years Eve. Other's just choose to make a few hundred working Cowboy games. Either way, it's a great way to earn some extra money and have fun doing it.

Summer is so busy with events and parties, that Bartenders can book themselves a gig for every weekend if they want.

Four years ago, The Premium Institute of Bartending established its own staffing company to meet the needs of the industry. Premium Event Staffing hires only its own graduates and doesn't charge the client a fee for the services. What this means is 100% of the pay goes to the graduate. This allows us to have more competitive rates than other Event Companies.

Choosing the Right Bartending School in Dallas And Fort Worth Based on FACTS

Lately, I received a lot of comments from prospective students regarding statements being made by other Bartending Schools that are false. Hopefully, this article will clear up some of the misconception.

1. Bartending Schools in Texas do not receive Accreditation. The are only Approved and Regulated by The Texas Workforce Commission. Any Bartending School in Texas that claims to be accredited is misleading you. Beware!!!

2. Bartending Schools that claim you don't need to learn the Point of Sale system are clearly stating that ONLY because they do not teach it. Unless you come into the course with experience using a touch screen Point of Sale System, employers will shy away from hiring you. Although the systems are not that complex, it is critical to have some experience using these prior to graduating.

3. As you may know, 5 years ago, when I opened the first Premium Institute of Bartending School, I included a 2-hour Externiship as a requirement for the program. This means that you will be sent out to a REAL bar prior to graduation to Bartend for a couple of hours. The reason I added this to the program was due to employer feedback and the importance of getting on the job training before you go out there for real. This program has been so successful, that we find that many of our Extern sites hire our graduates on the spot.

A Bartending School that claims that the Externship is a waste of time clearly hasn't done their homework in the industry.

So, in summary, look at all the facts when choosing a Dallas or Fort Worth Bartending School.
Ask the following questions.

1. How long have they been in business?

2. Do they have a staff member dedicated to Job Placement?

3. How do they provide Nationwide Job Placement?

4. Do they have a real draft beer system on site? On average, draft beer will represent at least 35% of the drinks you make.

5. Is you final exam based on just written testing or on do you have a speed test as well?

6. Does the Bartending School have an Externship Program. Don't be fooled by promises of guaranteed hiring.

One of the benefits of being a graduate of The Premium Institute of Bartending Schools is the right to come back to the school to take a Refresher Course when needed. Some bartenders return to update their skills in a certain area while others need to retake the entire course.

If you have been working at a bar only making certain cocktails or pouring only wine or beer, it may result in you forgetting some of the skills that you were taught in class. Before you return to applying for more advanced bartending positions, you may need to return to the school to practice.

If you have not tended bar in awhile by choice or circumstance, you may want to return to the campus to take the entire program again.

When someone is entering a technical field, whether it is Bartending, Truck Driving, Cosmetology, or even the Medical Profession, that school’s training includes an Externship (On the Job Training) as part of their training. That is why as the owners of The Premium Institute of Bartending, we included the Externship requirement as part of our Bartending Program Curriculum. Over the years, our Externship program has allowed us to establish strong relationships with numerous local bars and restaurants. It is a win/win situation. The Bar and Restaurant owners get a preview of their potential Bartender and our students get real Bartending experience.

HERE’S HOW THE BARTENDING EXTERNSHIP WORKS:

On the first day of class, the Externship Coordinator meets with every student to schedule the time and location of their Externship. We do our best to match you with an environment that you may want to work in, since many of our students get hired at their Externship site.

At your Externship, you will get to make real drinks for real customers. You will get to interact with the customers, and observe a real point of sale system in use. You will understand how a bar tab is managed and how a service bar is ran. No matter how real our school simulates a real Bar, it is no substitute for the real thing.

You will work under the guidance a Lead Bartender or Bar Manager. This allows you to ask questions and observe a real bar in action.

Not all bartending schools are the same

I realize that some experienced bartenders are not fans of bartending schools. After speaking with many people it seems to be due to poor training environments or the fact that you may be able to get a bartending job without any training. I do believe some may be able to get one (after bar backing or serving for a while), but the training helps one's confidence level and skills.We don't just teach drink recipes. We teach speed, accuracy, presentation, how to increase tips, and a complete understanding of all liquor types. What we can't teach is personality. You must be outgoing, friendly, a take charge person, and like to work in a fast paced environment.Our students get jobs as bartenders when they complete the program.

So, try it on your own and if it doesn't work, look into a school. As a school owner, I would ask the following questions before enrolling:

1. Is the owner on site or is the school run by an employee
2. Can I observe a class before enrolling
3. Where are your graduates working
4. Can I speak to current students and graduates
5. Can I see your complete training manual?

Most schools cost @ 600.00 and take 30ish hours to complete. This you should earn back in just a week or two of working.
